From the first accordion built by Antonio Galanti in 1890 to the latest microchip created by Generalmusic Research and Development Centre, the story of the Company stands out for the great skill and entrepreneurial spirit of its workforce.
The milestones that have marked this long story of success include the famous trade-name "GEM", which in 1959 was the first company in Italy to start manufacturing electronic organs.
The renowned "LEM" was founded in 1969 for the production of sound diffusion systems.
Further steps forward were made with a joint venture between Generalmusic and "Ahlborn" for the production of classic organs and the acquisition of "Schulze Pollmann" for acoustic pianos.
These prestigious names represent the determination to protect and promote the great traditions of music in general and Generalmusic in particular. Generalmusic today is an industrial enterprise that groups the various sectors of activity and employs over 400 persons. Sales figures for the catalogue of 200 products, divided into the specific sectors of keyboard instruments, sound amplification systems, classical organs and acoustic pianos, grew by 30% over the last four years. Exports are made to 80 countries in five continents, with a perfect balance of the trend of expansions between domestic and foreign markets. The number of research engineers and programming technicians employed by Generalmusic has increased dramatically over the last few years. Today, Generalmusic is one of the few companies in the field of musical instruments and sound system production that designs and manufactures its analog and digital technology itself, directly controlling every step of the process.
Particularly important links have been established with the Universities of Padua, Milan, Pisa and Bologna and with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for joint research projects.

Life cycles Keeping a catalogue of 200 products that are created, updated and phased out at an average speed of every two years means working all the time without making mistakes. Above all if the products in question feature a very special configuration that makes them substantially different from anything else on the market.

This brief turnover rate of life cycles is a result of the rapidly evolving technology at the heart of our products. Technology that Generalmusic has developed itself, with its own research programmers, aimed at achieving a level of no-compromise quality made possible by direct control over our entire production process.

The just-in-time target The complete control of production has led to remarkable results. On one hand, Generalmusic has avoided the overall leveling-out of quality and product identity implicit in the use of prefabricated technology. On the other, we have created the basic premises for a new concept of design that regards the total definition of a product from start to finish.
A variety of important functions and specializations both inside and outside the company play a vital role. Our microchips, for instance, are made in California to Generalmusic specifications by 'VSLI Technology Inc.', one of the most advanced producers of electronic micro technology at a worldwide level. The same policy is followed for other digital and analog components, manufactured by leading companies that guarantee the same high standards of quality that are a part of the Generalmusic philosophy. Naturally, these companies are far more than contract suppliers - they are co-workers that integrate their skill and know-how into the Generalmusic matrix. Every sector, collaboration, role and job within the company or directly controlled by it is guided by the principles of a high production profile. These principles necessarily lead us to a more fluid, flexible and dynamic way of working, where every individual adds the quality of a single task to the global quality of every product.

Numerical Control Work Centre One of the latest arrivals in the machine shop of the Generalmusic plant is the MCX-600/18 Numerical Control Work Centre. This remarkable new machine has been assigned to the drilling and thread-cutting operations involved in the manufacture of the heat sinks used in Generalmusic products. The MCX-600/18 is exceptionally capable of providing successful solutions for the technological evolution that this type of product is undergoing, which calls for increasingly higher levels of heat dispersion combined with drastic reductions in size and weight. Computerized numerical control allows the new machine to reach particularly high standards of accuracy and quality, and minimizes the risk of human error.
One of the factors taken into consideration when Generalmusic decided on the purchase of the MCX-600/18 was its great flexibility. This is essential for a manufacturing system that works with a wide range of different products, and our job specifications often have to change very frequently. But with the MCX- 600/18, we can now switch to a different work configuration in five minutes or even less.
